Mending the Highlanderâs Heart: Highland Destinies by Aileen Adams

On his way into town, he spent the remainder of the money he had made while working in the village on supplies he would need for his journey. He wanted to get as far away from here as quickly as possible and that would mean not having to stop for days, weeks if he could manage it.
The people at the market who had grown familiar with him tried to make idle conversation, but he didnât have the energy to put on a mask and pretend to be his charming self. He moved quickly, not wanting to run into Ailis or Haddie. He didnât want another uncomfortable conversation in the presence of the entire village markets.
An hour later he was checked out of his room. It did not take him long to pack up his things. He had been living out of his bags for so many months that he could have packed them in his sleep which was a bit frustrating at the momentâhe could have used the distraction. As it was, he had spent so little time at the inn that there wasnât much to pack.
After all of his supplies are loaded, he made his way down to the stables. He took his time brushing his horse, wanting to pamper the animal before their long trip together. Mac let his hands slide over every inch of his horse, checking that the horseshoes were on well and wouldnât be causing him any unnecessary stops once they left.
Satisfied that everything was in order, Mac strapped his staddle to the horseâs back and led him out of the stall by the reins.
He stepped out of the barn and let out a low string of curses. The skies had turned dark and cloudy and the wind had stopped completely. From the looks of it, they were in for a storm, and a bad one at that. In any other situation, he might have reconsidered his plans, but he felt he had no other choice.
In order to keep Ailis as safe as possible, he needed to leave now, even if that meant having to ride through the rain. He had traveled through worse before and was determined that he would be just fine.
The rest of the village had disappeared into their homes as they prepared to batten down for the storm, leaving the road between the stables and Ailisâ shop empty. He could see her standing in the window, watching him.
For a moment, he didnât move from his place in the middle of the road. He had planned to leave without saying goodbye as he thought that might be the simplest way to do this. But with Ailis staring him down through the glass panes, it just felt cowardly.
He tugged on the reins and walked the fifteen feet that separated him from her front porch. While tying the reins around the post, he heard the door to her shop swung open, slamming against the wall behind it.
âSo thatâs it?â she accused. âYe are going to waltz out the same way ye waltzed in.
